U našoj zemlji i širom svijeta danas se obilježava Međunarodni dan žena, 8. mart. Redakcija Portala Reprezent.ba želi svim pripadnicama ljepšeg spola sretan Dan žena.

Međunarodni dan žena, 8. marta, proglašen 1920., a službeno priznat u Ujedinjenim narodima 1977., simbolizira dugu historiju borbe za ženska prava, kao što su pravo glasa, pravo na legalizaciju pobačaja ili danas pravo na rad. Prva inicijativa potekla je od američke Socijalističke stranke 1909., a iduće godine na Međunarodnoj konferenciji žena socijalista u Kopenhagenu, na poticaj Njemice Clare Zetkin izglasano je načelo proglašenja Međunarodnog dana žena, ali bez utvrđenog datuma. U to vrijeme u industrijskim zemljama zaredali su zahtjevi protiv diskriminacije pri zapošljavanju i zahtjevi za pravo glasa ženama. Dan žena prvi je put bio proslavljen 19. marta 1911. u Austriji, Danskoj, Njemačkoj i Švicarskoj s više od milion žena koje su sudjelovale u manifestaciji. Idućih godina taj dan se zaboravlja zbog rata i cijepanja radničkog pokreta, ali nov poticaj stiže iz Rusije gdje su 8. marta 1917. (23. februara po ruskome kalendaru) radnice u Sankt Peterburgu (tada Petrogradu) prosvjedovale tražeći kruha i povratak muškaraca s ratišta. Tim je danom zapravo počela februarska revolucija i Lenjin je 1921. uveo Dan žena u počast radnicama.

Tradicija 8. marta ostala je jaka u komunističkim zemljama pa u Kini i danas na taj dan žene rade pola radnog vremena. Feministički pokret s početka 70-ih godina poseže za Danom žena kako bi na taj dan tražio jednakost političkih i socijalnih prava među spolovima. Godine 1977. Ujedinjeni narodi proglasili su 8. mart „Međunarodnim danom za prava žena i za mir“. Otada dan ima simboličko značenje, pogotovo u državama gdje se žene moraju boriti za osnovna prava, a posvuda gdje su žene žrtve nasilja ili nejednakosti.
